Bill Barnhart

Bill Barnhart
Director

Bill is the Director of the International Center and has worked
in international programs and services at the University of Utah for
over 25 years.  Each year, Bill leads the staff of the International
Center in providing services for approximately 2,500
international students and providing study abroad opportunities
around the world for more than 500 University of Utah students.
He has traveled extensively around the world, but has not yet
had the fortune of traveling to sub-Saharan Africa, which he hopes
will be his next destination.

Marilyn Owen
Marilyn Owen
Coordinator, International Student and Scholar Services

Marilyn advises international students on immigration matters and
she serves as the liaison between the University and USCIS.
She coordinates the University's J-1 Exchange Visitors Program
for exchange students and visiting researchers and professors.
Marilyn helps students with legal questions and academic advice.
She is serving on the State Board of International Educators.
She has been involved in international education for over 30 years.

Mark Johnson

Mark works in the International Center as the Immigration Specialist where he advises students on immigration policies.  He is gradually completing an English degree with an emphasis in technical writing.

Jennifer Givins
Jennifer Givens

Immigration Specialist

Jennifer Givens works as an Immigration Specialist, advising international students on U.S. immigration policies. She has a background in education and an interest in comparative international study.   She is new to Utah and is enjoying the skiing and hiking.

Anjali Hammond

Anjali Pai Hammond
Assistant Director for Outreach and Development
Anjali coordinates our international student and scholar orientations.
She develops partnerships with community organizations and businesses; manages the International Resource Network and creates campus and community outreach programs. She also coordinates the International Visitors Office on campus in cooperation with the International Programs Office. Anjali is serving in a regional leadership position for the National Association of International Educators. She is currently working on her Master's Degree in the Educational Leadership & Policy Department, lived in Singapore for 12 years and hopes to visit New Zealand again.

Nobu

Nobunari Isono

Japanese Translator / Computer System / Clerk:

International Student and Scholar Services

Nobu is a clerk and Japanese translator in the International Center.

A full-time student, he is majoring in Mathematics, Economics, and Mechanical Engineering. In addition to working in the International Center, Nobu also works for the Union Programming Council as Assistant Director of Technology and is a board member for Crimson Nights. Nobu enjoys assisting international students, especially new Japanese students at the U.

Jessica Hansen Jessica Hansen
Clerk: International Student and Scholar Services

Jessica is a full time student majoring in Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in Sociology. She works in 410 in the mornings helping international students.  Jessica lived in China and taught English for 4 months. In her free time she enjoys camping, traveling, running, and cooking. Her dream someday is to see the pyramids in Egypt and to go to Paris with her husband.

Maryam

Maryam Mortazavi

Student Intern: International Student and Scholar Services

Maryam is the International Center Student Intern working to provide programming and assistance to International Students. She is an undergrad senior studying Accounting and will be graduating in May 2008.  Maryam is also involved with many on campus student groups including the Muslim Students Association, Student Alumni Association, DESB Opportunity Program and ASUU. She was born in California and raised in Salt Lake City but her family is orignially from Iran. She visits her extended family in Iran every couple of years and loves everything about her Iranian heritage and culture.

Jesse Pugh Jesse Pugh
Study Abroad Advisor

Jesse coordinates the University's semester and academic
year exchange programs as well as advising students
about summer programs and international internships in the
Americas, Spain, the Middle East, and Africa. A graduate
of the University of Utah, Jesse studied abroad three times -
twice in Mexico and once in Spain.  Jesse is currently
pursuing a Master's Degree in Intercultural Relations and
he's hoping his next travel adventure will be in Japan.

Alison Alison VanDerWege
Study Abroad Advisor

Alison coordinates the University’s faculty-led and exchange
programs in Europe, as well as affiliated study abroad programs
and internships in the region.  She graduated from Butler University
with a B.A. in International Studies and Spanish and studied
abroad in Mexico and the Southern Cone of South America. 
Most recently, she completed two years of service with the Peace
Corps in Guatemala as an environmental education volunteer.   
Alison hopes to continue her international travel in Europe and Asia.

Christoph Dressler

Sponsored Student Program

Christoph is our Sponsored Student Coordinator. He advises sponsored students on academic, campus and student life issues. He also acts as liaison between sponsoring organizations such as governmental entities and the University of Utah.  Christoph is a native German and has worked since 1999 in international student exchanges.  He is an avid skier, mountain biker and hiker and the majestic Wasatch Mountains cradling Salt Lake City are his playground.  Every now and then Christoph recharges his batteries in the incredible National Parks and Mounuments of Southern Utah and their solitude, desert environment.

Linda Phelps Linda Phelps
Administrative Assistant

Linda supervises the budget and finance operations for the department and the study abroad programs.  She also assists students with their financial questions regarding study abroad accounts. She really enjoys working with students and has been with the International Center over 25 years.  Linda has traveled to England, Scotland, Mexico, and the Caribbean.  In her free time, Linda enjoys camping, boating, cooking, and spending time with family.

Dick Baldwin Lorina Tester
Associate General Counsel

Lorina graduated from the New York Law School in 2000. Before joining
the University in November 2003, Lorina worked in business
immigration and employment law firms in New York City, where she
focused on physicians and research scholars from a variety of
institutions across the country. Lorina also completed fellowships
in the Office of the New York Public Advocate, the Manhattan
Borough President's Office, and as a Consumer Advocate in
Washington D.C. Prior to attending law school, Lorina worked in
the Planned Giving area in the Development Office of the New York
Public Library.

As Associate General Counsel, Lorina provides regulatory oversight
on employment-based immigration matters. Lorina is located
in the Park Building, where she assists University faculty and staff
in the preparation and extension of H-1B1, TN, and O-1 visas,
advises J-1 physicians, and prepares and coordinates all
University sponsored applications for Lawful Permanent Resident
("green card") applications.

Kelly South
Kelly South
Administrative Assistant

Kelly has been at the International Center since 2003 and enjoys
watching all the students depart and arrive to the U.S. 
She also really enjoys assisting in employment-based immigration
matters on behalf of the University. Kelly graduated from
the University of Utah with her B.A. degree in English in 2001. 
She lived in Costa Rica for nearly two years and has visited Mexico. 
If she could go anywhere is the world, she would go to Greece
(for the food!!) and the U.K.
